We Will Remember Them

Mayor Lynda Robertson laid the first wreath at the town’s recently refurbished War Memorial.

A large crowd filled Midsomer Norton High Street for this year’s Remembrance Parade which was attended by local MP, Jacob Rees-Mogg. Blessed by glorious sunshine, the town paid their respects to the glorious dead in a solemn and moving ceremony.

After the the laying of wreaths was completed, dignitaries preceded to St John’s Church while many others moved on to the Legion or the Cricket Club.

Midsomer Norton Cricket Club hosted a poignant display, curated by Chairman Graeme King, about all the cricketers lost in the wars with pictures and information relating to the fallen men and their backgrounds. A project is underway to digitise the data so this important historical archive can be shared with the wider community.

The Midsomer Norton War Memorial is a Grade II listed building. Over time the Memorial had become weathered, and the inscriptions were hard to read. The Town Council commissioned David Dunscombe to carry out the cleaning in 2020 to coincide with the 100-year anniversary of the erection of the Memorial. Work was finished in February this year.

The restoration project was funded from the Councils War Memorial Ear Marked Reserve.
